Overall, women own and run an estimated 8.6 million businesses and contribute approximately $1.3 trillion to the economy. They provide employment opportunities for 7.7 other Americans. Over the course of the last decade, annual sales on behalf of women-owned first have increased by 57%.

The nonprofit membership group, Women Presidents’ Organization released a list of the 50 fastest growing women-owned or led businesses in North America. This is the six annual list published by WPO. Here is a spotlight on three, including their mission statements and some statistical facts about the success of each. The companies specialize in a wide range of areas and provide a variety of services, and their founders have a range of backgrounds.

Happy Family owned by Shazi Visram

Happy Family is a company run out of New York City that reported gross revenues of $63 million over the last year. The company mission statement focuses on changing “the trajectory of children’s health through nutrition.” They believe firmly in the power and impact of organic food, and their food has no artificial hormones, persistent toxic pesticides, or GMOs. It is a company founded by a mother who wanted to find an outlet to feed children healthy and earth-friendly snacks.

Strategic Communications owned by Kathy Mills

Strategic Communications is a company started and ran out of Louisville, Kentucky. Between 2010 and 2012 it took off, growing gross revenues 80% to $42 million. This company is an Information Technology Solutions company that works with “ small businesses, commercial enterprises, SLED institutions, and federal agencies across the United States delivering solutions to fit specific business requirements and end-user needs.” Customer service is a significant aspect of Strategic Communications, as they ensure customers have 24/7 access to their team of IT experts.

BrightStar Franchising owned by Shelly Sun

Shelly Sun is a health-care staffing franchisor that was founded in 2002. They began in Gurnee, Illinois, but have expanded to include over 250 locations across the United States. This company aims to give people who need to care for full time a higher quality of care and quality of life. They provide a full continuum of home care options for people of all ages, all the way from infants to seniors.
